********* Classic AI Touchdown Sounds *****************

By Tom Gibson  tgibson@sunstroke.sdsu.edu

This is the original idea of Thorsten Reichert, and his effects for modern turboprops and jets can be downloaded from AVSIM. They will not interfere with the effects and sounds in this package. Thanks so much for this great idea!

Thanks too to Wolfgang Gersch for bringing this to my attention, and to Alecaron for the original early jet JT3D sounds.

NOTE: This package is designed to be used with the AI Traffic package at www.calclassic.com/AIAircraft.htm

This package will provide the tire "chirp" and (optionally) reverse pitch/thrust sounds as the AI aircraft land. This is triggered by using the touchdown line of the EFFECTS section of the plane's aircraft.cfg file, Thorsten's great discovery. This package can be used by those without any other AI sound effects program, or can be used (in two different ways) by those using FSHotSFX (or FSHotSeat). Each approach will be described below.

Please note that this technique (an effect playing a wav sound file)has some limitations, compared to the default "idle" AI sounds and those played by FSHotSFX. There is minimal volume control with distance, no sound localization, and no doppler effect. These are actually not that noticable, due to the type of sounds they are.

INSTALLATION:

While the installation of these files is relatively simple, there may be a lot of files to edit, if you use one of the optional installations. The default installation requires no file edits. Optional installation instructions can be found below these default instructions.

DEFAULT

This installation is for people using the default AI sounds (or freeware addon sounds). These are located in the main FS SOUND folder and start with ai and xai. This installation will add the tire chirp and reverse sounds to most of my AI aircraft.

1. Download and install the classic AI aircraft files if you haven't done it very recently. This will provide the edited aircraft.cfg files. These are files #1 through #6 of my AI Aircraft package, at www.calclassic.com/AIAircraft.htm

2. First we will install the effects and sound files. Double click the zip file to open it. Inside you will find a SetupSE.exe file and a text file.

3. Double click the SetupSE file to start the installation. Press the Run button at the warning screen. If it doesn't find your main FS2004 folder automatically, press the ... button and browse to it.

4. OPTIONAL: I have included the piston, turboprop, and early JT3D jet idle sounds I have created or modified and use on my own system in the AI Idle Files folder. If you want to try them, first rename six files found in the main FS2004 SOUND folder. Rename:

ai_lgjet01.wav to ai_lgjet01.wav.orig
ai_twinprop01.wav file to ai_twinprop01.wav.orig
ai_twinturbo01.wav file to ai_twinturbo01.wav.orig
xai_lgjet01.wav to xai_lgjet01.wav.orig
xai_twinprop01.wav file to xai_twinprop01.wav.orig
xai_twinturbo01.wav file to xai_twinturbo01.wav.orig

Then copy these same six files found inside the AI Idle Files/Sound folder into your main FS2004 SOUND folder. They should NOT overwrite any files, or you have not renamed the originals correctly.

5. Restart FS and enjoy your new sounds! Adjust the Environment slider in FS Options/Settings/Sound to adjust all the AI sounds. Refer to the AI Touchdown Effects by Aircraft.txt file found in this archive to see which effect is played by which aircraft. Refer to the Default column.

INSTALLATION FOR THOSE USING FSHOTFSX

This package can be used in two different ways, depending on how you use FSHotSFX.

Method 1. For those using FSHotSFX all the time, it's probably best to continue using their reverse effects for the jets and turboprops, since they include things like variable length and doppler effect. So for jets and turboprops you should only use the tire chirp effect from this package. This will give the chirp *exactly* when the tires touch, improving that effect. You *will* use the piston reverse effects since that is not provided by FSHotSFX. To do this you will edit the jets' and turboprops' aircraft.cfg files to play only the tire chirp and let FSHotSFX provide the reverse sounds.

Method 2. For those using FSHotSFX only once in a while, it may be better to use the reverse effects found in this package, so you will have them all the time. In this case you will inactivate the relevant FSHotSFX sounds. Note that this will eliminate reverse sounds from any modern AI you have as well, and you will have to add the relevant touchdown EFFECTS lines copied from one of my AI planes into those planes' aircraft.cfg file as well. If you have a lot of modern AI I suggest Method 1. If this is a classic FS setup I suggest Method 2.

Install as follows:

1. First we will install the effects and sound files. Double click the zip file to open it. Inside you will find a SetupSE.exe file and a text file.

2. Double click the SetupSE file to start the installation. Press the Run button at the warning screen. If it doesn't find your main FS2004 folder automatically, press the ... button and browse to it.

3. OPTIONAL: I have included the piston, turboprop, and early JT3D jet idle sounds I have created or modified and use on my own system in the AI Idle Files folder. If you want to try them, first rename six files found in the main FS2004 SOUND folder. Rename:

ai_lgjet01.wav to ai_lgjet01.wav.orig
ai_twinprop01.wav file to ai_twinprop01.wav.orig
ai_twinturbo01.wav file to ai_twinturbo01.wav.orig
xai_lgjet01.wav to xai_lgjet01.wav.orig
xai_twinprop01.wav file to xai_twinprop01.wav.orig
xai_twinturbo01.wav file to xai_twinturbo01.wav.orig

Then copy these same six files found inside the AI Idle Files/Sound folder into your main FS2004 SOUND folder. They should NOT overwrite any files, or you have not renamed the originals correctly.

4. In your FSHotSFX (or FSHotSeat) folder you will find an AIBSound folder. Inside that you will find a file named AIB_TD.wav. This is the touchdown chirp file that we are replacing with these effects. Rename this file from AIB_TD.wav to AIB_TD.wav.orig.

5. Copy the AIB_TD.wav file found in the "For FSHotSFX Users" folder found in this zip archive into your FSHotSFX AIBSound folder. This file is silent, and will eliminate the inaccurately timed tire chirp from FSHotSFX.

6. IF YOU DECIDED ON THE FIRST INSTALLATION OPTION (use FSHotSFX reverse sounds), refer to the AI Touchdown Effects by Aircraft.txt file found in this archive to determine how to edit your AI Aircraft in the FS2004 AIRCRAFT folder. Use the FSHotSFX Always column. The planes with a * in the column need to be edited.

When you find a plane that needs to be changed, edit the line in the EFFECTS section of that plane's aircraft.cfg file as follows (I suggest you copy and paste). You will be converting Allison and Jet reverse effects to just Tires:

Change:
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_jet //fx_tchdwn, 1  OR
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_Allison_long  //fx_tchdwn, 1  OR
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_Allison_short  //fx_tchdwn, 1

to:

touchdown=fx_tchdwn_tires //fx_tchdwn, 1

7. IF YOU DECIDED ON THE SECOND INSTALLATION OPTION (use the reverse sounds in this package), then rename the following files in the AIBSound folder:

AIB_2JHR.wav to AIB_2JHR.wav.orig
AIB_2THR.wav to AIB_2THR.wav.orig
AIB_4JHR.wav to AIB_4JHR.wav.orig
AIB_4THR.wav to AIB_4THR.wav.orig

8. IF YOU DECIDED ON THE SECOND INSTALLATION OPTION, copy the following files from the "For FSHotSFX Users" folder found in this zip archive into your FSHotSFX AIBSound folder. These files are silent, and will eliminate the reverse sounds from FSHotSFX.

AIB_2JHR.wav
AIB_2THR.wav
AIB_4JHR.wav
AIB_4THR.wav

9. IF YOU DECIDED ON THE SECOND INSTALLATION OPTION: If you customized any sounds in the AIBlast.ini file, first make a backup copy of that file. Then remove the reverse thrust lines from the custom entries. If you used another customization method, remove the reverse thrust lines from those as well.

10. Restart FS2004 and enjoy your new sounds! Adjust the Environment slider in FS Options/Settings/Sound to adjust all the AI sounds.

MANUAL EDITING FOR OTHER PLANES

If you have other planes you want to give these sound effects, you will need to edit the plane's aircraft.cfg "touchdown=" line in the EFFECTS section as follows:

Tire chirp only (i.e. DC-4):
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_tires

Short piston reverse (i.e. CV-340):
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_piston_short

Medium piston reverse (i.e. DC-6B):
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_piston_med

Long piston reverse (i.e. L1649A):
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_piston_long

Short Allison turboprop reverse (i.e. CV-580):
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_Allison_short

Long Allison turboprop reverse (i.e. L-188):
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_Allison_long

Jet reverse (i.e. B707):
touchdown=fx_tchdwn_jet

IF YOU GET AN OVERWRITE WARNING FROM WINDOWS WHEN INSTALLING THE WAV FILES:

There are a very limited number of wav file names available for these effects, and it is inevitable that these will all be used by different authors for different purposes.

1. You will need to determine which program uses the sounds that are conflicting with this package. Play the sound in the main FS2004 SOUND folder by double clicking the offending wav file and listening to it.

2. Assuming you want to keep that file for its original purpose (i.e. you won't be uninstalling the other package), you will need to make some edits to the effects files in this package to point to a different file name, and rename the offending wav file(s) in this package.

3. Find out which effect from this package is using the problem wav file name:

Tires:  fx_tchdwn_tires.fx:  imp_med_b.wav
Allison Short: fx_tchdwn_Allison_short.fx: imp_med_c.wav
Allison Long: fx_tchdwn_Allison_long.fx: imp_med_d.wav
Jet: fx_tchdwn_jet.fx: imp_med_e.wav
Piston Short: fx_tchdwn_piston_short.fx: imp_small_e.wav
Piston Medium: fx_tchdwn_piston_med.fx: imp_small_f.wav
Piston Long: fx_tchdwn_piston_long.fx: imp_small_g.wav

4. Double click the effect file (from the list above, ends in .fx, found in the main EFFECTS folder after installation) to open it. Choose Wordpad from the list - if it's not listed there, click on Choose Program and find wordpad.exe in your Program Files\Windows NT\Accessories folder.

5. Edit the Sound Param number to use a different wav file name that is NOT present in your main SOUND folder (i.e. if imp_large_b.wav is available, change the line in that effects file to read Sound Param=2). The Sound Param number listed below corresponds to the wav file name listed beside it:

2  imp_large_b.wav
3  imp_large_c.wav
4  imp_large_d.wav
5  imp_large_e.wav

6.  Save the effects file.

7. Rename the problem wav file in this package (copied to a temporary folder) to the name listed above, matching the Sound Param number you used. Then copy it into your main SOUND folder.
